Using Technology in Literature Circles
by Maureen Kennedy, Educational Technology Coach Grades 4-6 -
Grade 5 students in Kendra Jones’ class have been participating in book clubs (Literature Circles) as a way to share what they have been thinking about and to reflect on their reading. Kendra used some innovative ideas to document what the students were doing, not only for her own evaluation, but also for the students to evaluate themselves.
Using iPads, iPad stands and mics, Kendra filmed the students as they talked in their groups. She set up the iPads in a way that would be least intrusive so the recording would not distract students during their conversations. Kendra also took photos of the discussions and shared them with her students. After the first group meeting, she shared the photos and the videos so students could see and hear how they participated.
Students were asked to reflect on their own participation by looking at the photos and adding their own speech bubbles about what they were doing and saying. Students also accessed the videos through QR Codes. They went through this process several times and what Kendra discovered was that students became better at sharing their ideas and thoughts within groups. The discussions became deeper, and their understanding and thinking more visible.
As teachers, we aim to reflect on our teaching and let our students reflect on their learning. Kendra's integration of technology in literature circles is a great example of holding a mirror for students to see themselves evolve in their learning, thinking deeply and articulating the newly acquired knowledge. Documenting learning for further development is key in all CIS classrooms.
