When Grade 4 students were engaged in their unit of inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, they investigated elements behind a great performance. The central idea was: “Performing arts provide opportunity for creative expression”.

Students explored many elements that could be used in performance. When it came time to do their summative assessment, students were given access to a variety of performances, from which they would choose one to critique. Once they chose the performance, they mapped out a plan on paper, using guiding questions, of what they would say.

Our Guiding Questions were:

  • What is the performance and performance style that you have chosen?
  • What is/are the performer(s) trying to express?
  • What are the elements of performance for this style?
  • How have the artists used performance elements to express themselves?

Once they completed answering the questions, students used their iPads to record their narration. Most students chose the iMovie app to record and edit their ideas. This was an excellent interpretation of the SAMR model redefined by using an iPad. Students embedded their videos on their blogs to share with their parents and a wider audience. The most striking outcome of this learning experience was the unique ways each student chose to complete their critique. They really have done a fabulous job!
