CIS Swimmers Qualify For The Nationals
Competitive sports are an integral part of the CIS culture, and as a school, we strive to provide a wide array of sporting opportunities that contribute to the holistic development of our students.
Our Swim Team is one of the competitive sports on offer to student athletes, and CIS is currently represented by 107 swimmers, who can often be seen hard at work in the pool. These young athletes put in long hours of training, in order to best represent our school, and each swim team member is training to build his/her own individual physical strength and stamina. They are continually striving to improve their strokes, and their speed, or in swimming terms, their personal bests. But how do our swim athletes measure their success and know if they have achieved their personal goals? By competing in swim meets where any new personal times (or bests) are recorded.
As we head into the final months of the school year, it is clear that our teams are doing exceedingly well. In February, our Husky swimmers tested themselves in a more challenging setting: they swam to qualify for the nationals. Based on the official time taking by SNAG (Singapore National Age Group Swimming), 32 CIS students qualified to compete in The Singapura Finance 46th Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships on 13-22 March.

Who are these student athletes? Let’s meet some of our rising stars in swimming.
Daniela-Nedo Swimming
Daniela is a gifted long distance swimmer from Grade 9. Despite her rigorous academic responsibilities, she is committed to training 7 times a week, with 2 one-hour sessions in the morning, and 5 two-hour sessions in the late afternoon. She has been swimming since the age of 12, and only competing in swim meets over the last two years. Thanks to Coach Jeffrey’s guidance, Daniela has discovered her strength in long distance swimming and concentrated her efforts in this field. She will be completing in all 100m-200m and 400m categories in the nationals. Her biggest supporter is her mum, who is always by her side and attends all her swim meets.
Nedo is another CIS swimming star who has a similar training schedule. While his training is a mixture of freestyle swimming, practices of kicking, stroking and improving breath control, his specialisation lies in breaststroke. Just like Daniela, Nedo has been swimming since the age of 12. He knew he was made for competitive swimming when he won his first medal. He loved that unique feeling of accomplishment. His goal has always been to improve his personal best. His proud mum never misses any of his accomplishments.
After getting to know these two exceptionally dedicated athletes, Daniela and Nedo, who have been training in the Black Squad (the highest ranking team in swimming), one wonders how hard the younger athletes in junior teams (Blue and Red Squads) train and compete to qualify for the nationals.
Ida and Lanihei
Lanihei (9 years) and Ida (10 years) are some of our younger committed swimming athletes in the Red Squad. They both love swimming and the lifestyle that comes with it. They have been swimming competitively for the last year and a half, and are adapting themselves to the early mornings and late afternoons, and the hour long swimming sessions. They both agree that the best moment is after the training when they get to enjoy a big meal! Lanihei’s favourite swimming style is breaststroke; Ida’s freestyle and backstroke.
Join us as we wish our talented swimmers all the best as they compete in the Nationals! Go Huskies!
