19U Girls Netball Had A Fun Yet Challenging Season
by Grade 9 Netball Athlete, Chloe Chiam -
Netball this season has been lots of fun. There were many new players to the sport this year, and many who were experienced players. The experienced ones acted as mentors, and were very helpful in pointing out mistakes or rules that were not as clear to the new team members. They also set a good example on the court. In all the games we played, everyone showed great energy and was very enthusiastic whilst playing. Those who were on the sidelines were also very supportive.
We had a very good start to the season with an easy first game against Nexus International - we won 15-1. This triumphant win got everyone hopeful about the rest of the season. However, the next few games were a little rocky, but as they went on, the gap between scores were becoming noticeably narrower. Practice sessions were really starting to pay off towards the end of the season, as everyone started coming to games with more drive and energy. This led to a very successful end of the season with three consecutive wins (ACSI 3 - 29-21; MCM 2 - 26-4; OFS 3 - 21-9). Throughout the season, team members showed a sustained improvement and developed a much deeper understanding of the game.
Our coach, Mr Scott Polkinghorne, also took the initiative to arrange a few casual games between the team and teachers - even after the season was over. These casual games led to better camaraderie amongst teammates, and helped us improve our general netball skills. We had two games in the school gym, the girls won the first one and the teachers won the second - they were both close games.
From the participation and interest shown by the team, I am certain that the majority of players will return next year!
